To help the Class XII students begin the new academic session with greater zest and learn through fun the school organized a session on story and poetry writing on 31st March 2023.
Elvira Fernandez, an educator, author and poet conducted a session for the students on the elements of Story Writing, Story Telling and Poem Writing. The session began with a video on a story titled ‘The two neighbours’ narrated by Ms. Fernandez. Students were then encouraged to solve a crossword puzzle which introduced them to the elements of a story. The first three students to solve the crossword correctly were given prizes. Ms. Fernandez then enlightened the attentive audience about the use of these elements (such as plot, setting, suspense, symbolism, etc.) in a story while writing or telling it. She went on to narrate the story behind her name, the nicknames she’s been given by friends and family as well as the humour behind the ludicrous way her name is sometimes pronounced. The students listened to a song on her name with keen interest and amusement. She reiterated the essentiality of creating a sense of curiosity which is a key element for a good story.
Ms. Fernandez then asked the students to write a few words and their rhyming words which they later used to create Rhyming poems. Class XII was then introduced to the technicalities of writing Sonnets, Skinny Poems and Shape Poems which they absorbed eagerly. The excited students wrote poems on different themes and read them out joyfully amidst much applause from their classmates. All efforts were rewarded with small incentives by the speaker which served as a positive reinforcement and generated a greater response. The students were buzzing with enthusiasm to present their poems.
The session ended with Ms. Fernandez inviting the students to write for NaPoWriMo 2023. She enlightened them about the concept of National Poetry Writing Month which begins on 1st April and lasts for thirty days. In this poetry marathon one can write thirty poems in thirty days. A few students expressed their desire to participate in it.
